A rose by any other name...

Through work, I came across some great/weird/quirky names of towns in South Africa.

  •  Alldays: really, I cannot understand this one.
  •  Estcourt: This can sound rude, if you have a mind that belongs in the gutter.
  •  Giants Castle: Imagine how cool it will be to say: "Oh I live in Giants Castle. Yes, seriously."
  •  Carolina: Now I have that tune "Oh Carolina" stuck in my head. **groan**

There were also a few strange street names in London. I used to always find them immensely amusing:

  •  Knightrider Street: Now this just plain awesome, not to mention retro in this day and age!
  •  Shoulder of Mutton Alley: again, I do not get this one.
  •  Hanging Sword Alley: Awesome, retro, quirky and cool!

Can you think of any strange names where you are?

Just weird or epic fail?

M1 told me one of the most bizarre things I have heard in a while:
"Mr X bought for his home an ice cream making machine, can you believe it?! Should I worry? Not a toaster or coffee maker but an ice cream making machine! I got weird friends."
"Now he is all about how delicious they are...still don't get it why..."
"Like you wake up in the morning and say: right, let's get up and get that ice cream machine."

First of all:
Is an ice cream making machine a necessity?

Second of all:
Is an ice cream making machine really necessary in a predominantly cold city like London?

I got to admit, it does not make much sense in my mind. But who can resist a treat like ice cream! Anyway, you tell me your thoughts!

Nerds, don't you just love 'em?

So I got a wonderful response a Honorary Sister-Person  via Google Buzz to my three day weekend concept mentioned in my previous post:

"i recently overheard some nerdy ppl talking about measurement units. The discussion started off with comments about the horror of imperial units and the ease of use of SI units.

It moved swiftly, to an a discussion about the day when imperial will be defeated to the awesome SI.

Until an Imperial supporter, a type from the old school- quite literally, put a spanner in the works by suggesting that the calendar would have to be rearranged. "This of coarse is because the number of hours in a day is based on the imperial system. So while SI uses simple tens and multiples thereof, imperial uses inches , feet , and yards etc where there are 3 feet in a yard and 12 inches in a foot etc. There are also 12 months in a year so 12 is the relating factor."

So 12 hours to reach midday wouldnt be internationally recognised under the SI time frame and we'd probably have 10 hours to midday with 100 minutes in each and then 100 seconds. I dont know if this works out but ...perhaps being all uniform we will have 10 months in a year and things will become verry bizzarre.

this leaves room for wonder. Perhaps there will be 10 day weeks...and hopefully , just hopefully

MORE WEEKEND:-) "

Some thoughts

Weekends are for:
  • Leisurely sitting down and eating your breakfast.
  • Listening to great music while doing so.
  • Sitting in your baggy PJs for as long as you like.
  • Sipping your coffee instead of gulping it down while it is far too hot to drink and scalding your tongue in the process.
  • Jumping back into bed after all of that for some reading time.
These sort of simple things bring me an immense, deep sated joy!

As a standard going forward, I really think weekends should be three, instead of two days. Yes, I will be much more productive in the week if that is the case!

Monday 11 October 2010

What a freaking treat!

Dayum! Three words: Chocolate. Covered. Strawberries! Another two words: at. work.

Whoa!

Enough to convert the bluest of Mondays to the brightest cerise and orange! Much thanks to Pricsilla for this not-so-guilty indulgence.

The flaws of human nature

It is possible that I am one of the last people on the planet to have watched the Stars Wars Sextet but hey, better late than never.

Before I started to watch it, I had to confirm with my two favourite brain boxes on watching Episodes IV, V, VI first and then I, II and III. One said to watch it consecutively, the other said watch it as they were released. Hmm...thanks guys.

So I decided to watch it as they were released. I must say Episodes IV, V, VI were rather simplistic with even simpler dialogue. Bleh...

BUT onto I, II and III! Whoa! Anakin's journey from obscurity to power hungry Sith is captivating. All the while knowing what is going to happen, I will still rooting for him to be good, remain good...very much like watching Romeo and Juliet - you know they're are going to die but you hope and pray that by some twist they won't!

Regardless, I feel a lot of compassion towards Anakin Skywalker for the simple reason that he is so flawed, so subject to his emotions, has much emotional baggage...it made him more human, more accessible. Evil manipulated that to their advantage so they could get the upper hand. But yes, Anakin did chose it himself as well even though he was only trying to protect what he held beloved. He is indeed a tragic hero, and now one of my favourites too.

In any case, seeing the character's demise made me think about how we all approach emotions - it can be so strong and can pull us to do so much - the very high of highs and the lowest of lows. The Jedi Masters, along with many religions in the reality we live in, preach about having that calm centre and disassociating the self from fears and attachments, especially in this physical world. That is something Anakin clearly did not practice. He had emotional baggage from the time he was a child, and I wonder how detrimental it is to people in their normal lives, if they do not deal with their emotional baggage. Are those from dysfunctional homes therefore more prone to snap at some point, if their issues are not resolved, or if they do not make peace with it? Are they at a natural disadvantage with all the chips on their shoulder? Does that mean that people who have led a relatively normal lives from childhood more prone to achieve all that they can, be all they can be? It made me think about being at peace with oneself, truly and fully, lest you go down your own dark path, whatever that may be for you.

Merde! Damn! Hell! And every other profanity around!

There are times in your life when you really wish you could kick yourself. I have been having a few of those days. Reason being is that I am waking up before 5AM! I am not sure what the problem is, but I am not sleeping any earlier than usual so that certainly cannot account for the early rise into consciousness. And the worst part: I cannot fall back into slumber! So yeah, I have become my own worst enemy and even I cannot sort myself out.

Do you believe?

I know it is nowhere near Christmas but this was much-too-darling NOT to share. I got it from here:
http://www.newseum.org/yesvirginia/

Eight-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York's Sun, and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial Sept. 21, 1897. The work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church has since become history's most reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies, and other editorials, and on posters and stamps.

"DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old.
"Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.
"Papa says, 'If you see it in THE SUN it's so.'
"Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?

"VIRGINIA O'HANLON.
"115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET."

VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Sorry honey

Yesterday I had a missed called on my mobile from a private number. I called the S.O. to find out if it was him.

His reply: "Yes, it was me," and I smiled, "but I dialled the wrong number." My face fell. "Excuse me?! As if my number can ever be the wrong one when dialled by you!" I screeched, in jest, of course.

Hmph...what a cheek! **evil grin**

Friday 20 August 2010

On the 21st of August:

  • A town was founded.  In 1760 the church of  "Our Lady of Candlemas of Mayagüez (Puerto Rico)" was formed, establishing the basis for the founding of the city.
  • The British empire expanded. In 1770 James Cook claimed eastern Australia and named it New South Wales.
  • Freedom is fought for. In 1831 Nat Turner led a rebellion to free blacks from slavery in America.
  • History is snatched! In 1911 the Mona Lisa is stolen by a Louvre employee!
  • Royalty celebrates! King Mohammed VI of Morocco has his birthday. Happy Birthday Your Majesty!
Oh and this year I will also clock another year after my day of birth...and what a time to think, reflect, mope and perhaps even celebrate? Yes it is my party, and I can cry if I want to! **winks**

Oh um, sigh....

A radio show helped me stroll down memory lane this morning. They played the theme songs to classics from them days: The Gummy Bears tune, the Duck Tales song, the Heman song and even the Knightrider theme! I am sure the guys sitting in the bakkie* in front of me, thought me a tad insane smiling the way I did!

But it reminded me of time that was much more simple, when you though being an adult was easy, when the hardest decision was whether to play with a doll or a teddy and which imaginary friend to invite over for the tea party. It made me wonder about life in general and whether there is sense in this madness... How do we know what our path is? Why don't we get answers to our questions? Should we be asking questions? Is it wrong to think the way you do? Why are some people such selfish, cruel beings? And is it okay to give up and curl under your duvet till you feel ready (enough) to face the world again? So many questions...all rhetorical...

Bakkie*: Afrikaans word for van or lorry.

I like to scour around for treasures, my eyes constantly darting this way and that. It was a windy day and this little treasure found it's way into the S.O's driveway. Somehow it gave me a case of the very warm fuzzies. :)

The vuvzelas sound over and over. Can you hear it? The world is visiting! Do you see them? The excitement and joy is tangible. Can you feel it? I am going giddy! Yes, the World Cup Soccer 2010 starts tomorrow here in Johannesburg, South Africa. Oh yay!

Jolted out of slumber

Sent text message to S.O* at 5.00AM that reads:

"Oh my God! I dreamed someone asked me if you proposed cos they seen a ring on my finger. Then they asked if it was diamonds and I said I hope he was not that stupid! Urg! Woke up with such a fright! PLEASE don't do stupid things in reality!"

A bit of background context to those who do not know me or us:

  • I do not believe in marriage for myself. But S.O and I have been together for nine years.
  • No, I am not a bitch hag from hell stringing him along. Neither is he very ready at this stage.
  • Now that we are of marriageable age, and part of an ethnic community, the pressure is on!
  • The only reason I will marry, is to be with S.O for the rest of our lives and he is traditional like that.
  • And I really don't like diamonds and proper jewellery.

  • ... about walking back to your chalet and having sand in between your toes and all over your hair
  • ... feeling the sun's fierce power on your head and feet as you step onto silver beach sand
  • ... meandering exotic labyrinths of cities that carry memories and future hopes on it's walls
  • ... seeing the world through a refreshed, revitalised state of being
  • ... swallowing salty sea water as all too powerful waves knock you down
  • .... seeing a different way of life and remembering how it is the small things that make us fortunate
  • .... about falling in love again

Oh and what may that be? A rope? Woven yarn? Nope... That, my friends, is the hair I cut off  - 30CM! And now it is going to CANSA so they can make a wig. What a relief!

Such non-sense!

There are those days when reality hits you like the worst bitch slap you have ever received. When all the work you've done blows up into tiny ashes, when your hopes are transformed into dust and you are left clutching the thin, thin air. It is on those days when your most vile, soul cataclysmic thoughts stare you in the face screaming: "You are powerless! What is, is and even you cannot change it!" You sit there,  like a dumbfounded dope with your mouth hanging open. "Fuck!" seems to be the only word repeating the circuit of your mental processes. And the next day you have to get up, go to work and function like yesterday never happened. Yeah, this sort of shit really stinks.

The Peter Pan Syndrome

I am currently having a lot of trouble finding the right words - hence the absence from Blogger-ville. My insides are a muddled, muddy mess. I cannot begin to wade through it at the moment. But I think this quote captures a bit of what I feel right now, but I could be wrong. Regardless it is still a wonder of words. I got it from Slutty's sister, who got it from another friend. :)

"I'm convinced that most people do not grow up. We find parking spaces and honour our credit cards. We marry and dare to have children and call that growing up.I think what we do is mostly grow old.We carry accumulation of years in our bodies and our faces; but generally our real selves, the children inside, are still innocent and shy as magnolias" - Maya Angelou

'Tis true, magic is real!

A window on the University of Cape Town campus. It could be the gateway to another realm.

The buffet restaurant atop Table Mountain. Looks like a charming fairy cottage to me.

The sky flushed with hues of lilac, orange and pink as the sun sets, with table mountain in the distance. The magicians of sky art no doubt hard at work here.

I felt it, that sense of magic in Cape Town this Easter weekend. Yes, that flicker and spark of hope is ignited again. Yesssss!

"Love breaks - take aim!"

The Writer emailed this quote to me. I love it. And I love the author.

“Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn't it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses, you build up a whole suit of armor, so that nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life...You give them a piece of you. They didn't ask for it. They did something dumb one day, like kiss you or smile at you, and then your life isn't your own anymore. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so simple a phrase like 'maybe we should be just friends' turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart. It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It's a soul-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain. I hate love.”

~Neil Gaiman

Soft and warm, like a duvet cover

Sometimes you read something, and you feel your heart rate go up a notch and your mouth hangs open, and the beauty makes you breathless. I had this moment and had to share:

"They met in the space between worlds, where the rule of quotidian concerns - prudence, common sense, customs, cupidity - like the law of gravity, at a distance from the earth's strong  pull, attenuates into airy nothingness, and
we are let be free to be ourselves; that liberty itself induces love, for who does not long to be secretly released from the cramp of self obsession and the prison of self regard? Somewhere in our being the scent of freedom lingers, like the elusive smell of cut grass from a dream of a lost summer, to the breeze of fresh and endless oceans. The everyday world is at once too carping and too cautious to admit such recollection, although, if we are lucky, it catches us fleetingly, as we ride, or run, or paint, or cook, or make love - or music, wine or stories. Only to the blessed does it return in a single quenching shaft..."

Unleashing my inner geek

The ThunderCats team

I had a good few listening moments in the car this morning. A local radio station, Highveld, decided to talk about a wonderful, old cartoon that I adored when I was young: ThunderCats. And so they proceeded to play the theme song! It took me way back to a simple, happy time. So yeah, I smiled from ear to ear whilst in traffic and I think everyone who passed me thought I was a freak. But my question is: Do you remember this show? And what does your inner geek love?

Need to rattle those memory cells? More ThunderCats info can be found on ThunderCats Lair

What's V.D* without cup cakes?!

One way ticket to cupcake heaven!

A work colleague and soul mate, with a passion for cooking and baking that surpasses mine, created these divine V.D* creatures. She used a basic vegan recipe and made it into a gourmet master piece(s)! The sweetness mixed with a hint of coffee left me shivering and tingling from it's decadence. It is so good, I think it is sinful!

Help Haiti - yes you can!

Help them help Haiti! A fellow writer and soul mate (we call him Tramp) works at a South African organisation trying to do the following:

A month after the earthquake and the island of Haiti is still short of supplies! South Africans are willing to help but don't know how. Thankfully, Masimanyane Women's Support Centre has come to the fore, giving us the chance to help resurrect the lives of Haitians.

Masimanyane is looking to collect items that contribute to the welfare of women and children who have been victims of rape and robbery in the last month. The organisation encourages each person to provide one item each. These include:

  • Feminine supplies, combs, feminine wipes, panties, bras and clothes and other support (especially for pregnant women and new mothers).
  • Personal/household supplies for birth delivery and after: (rubbing alcohol or disposable anti-germicidal substitutes; baby wipes, baby wraps, pampers, socks and caps and supplies for nursing mothers/newborn; (It is cold at nights so there is need to cover the feet and heads of the newborns).
  • Clothing and under garments for women and young girls
  • Bedding and blankets for babies and mothers.
  • Urgent need for the morning after pill (rape of girls and young women is becoming a problem, as is common in the aftermath of most disasters).
  • Any items that you think would be useful for women and girls.
  • In general any supplies (such as toothpaste, tooth brushes, soaps, etc) that can be used for daily living for men, women, boys and girls are welcome.

By getting your employees to contribute at least one item you will help better the lives of hundreds who are suffering. You may collect the items at your offices and Masimanyane will arrange to pick it up.

Some link love

Once upon a time, Being Brazen, a wonderful blogger from Cape Town decided to start a book club with a difference. We don't meet, we do not have to read the same books, we all do not reveal our true identities but it is just as satisfying as a conventional book club. Hmmm...somehow I know feel part of an underground super hero gangs, very Watchmen-esque. Closeted and open book lovers can find all the fantasy, action, thrillers and romance here: Being Brazen Books

My very first review for the club on Alice in Wonderland can be read now too!

And they all lived happily ever after, between the covers of books.

"World Chocolate Wonderland" - I wish I was there!

Taken from IOL

Beijing - Thousands of Chinese on Friday flocked to a new chocolate theme park, gobbling the sweet treat and savouring the visual feast of replicas of the Great Wall, the Terracotta Army and even a sleek BMW.

Organisers are hoping that Beijing's "World Chocolate Wonderland", on the Olympic Green near the Bird's Nest Stadium, will boost the chocolate market in China, where the candy is not as popular as it is in Western countries.

"Hmmm!" exclaimed Dai Qing, a 20-year-old student, as she watched an expert make designs out of chocolate.

"I love eating chocolate, so I wanted to see the process of making it and to understand the chocolate culture," she said.

The 20,000-square-metre venue includes three halls full of exhibits and demonstrations, all temperature-controlled to keep the elaborate replicas - safely behind huge glass panes - from melting.

Long queues of people milled past the cocoa terracotta warriors - both life-size and a miniature army - the car, and a 10-metre-long model of the Great Wall.

One exhibit was dedicated to sport, with a chocolate basketball player soaring towards the hoop. The BMW, located in the same hall, attracted huge attention.

According to a report in the official China Daily newspaper, 10 craftsmen needed four tons of chocolate and six months to make the car.

In another display, a huge array of chocolate fountains sent 1.5 tons of the smooth, dark liquid spilling in various directions - recalling Roald Dahl's beloved book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".

"The break sound of the deluxe chocolate is clear and crisp, and the break line is straight," said one explanatory panel on the chocolate knowledge wall.

In the courtyard outside, techno music blared out as two clowns performed tricks with audience members on a stage, a bouncy castle stood - empty - and people dressed in chocolate-coloured costumes milled around.

Back inside, employees shouted "move forward" at regular intervals as more and more people - mostly students on holiday - filed past exhibits detailing chocolate traditions in countries such as France, Switzerland and Belgium.

The exhibit that attracted most people was the building devoted to candy, which housed interactive games and displays allowing customers to experience different sweet flavours from around the world.

At the entrance - where tickets cost a steep 80 yuan ($12), a high price for the average Chinese consumer - men dressed in purple cloaks and pointed hats welcomed visitors.

"It's great but the entrance fee is expensive, especially for students," said 21-year-old Liang Miao.

"I think this is going to be popular for a short period of time but not in the long term. It's right next to the Bird's Nest, and for 80 yuan, people would rather go there than here."

Organisers hope to attract one million visitors to the park before it closes in April, when the weather will begin to get too warm. It will then reopen next January, with all-new displays. - AFP

Sorry chocolate, I have another vice!

Popcorn. Don't you just love it? It is one of those happy foods that always always puts a smile on my face. I can have it a couple of times a week. And it is sold here at work! :) I am weak so I succumb to my temptation regularly. I only hate those crumbs at the bottom of the packet that becomes small, hard-to-pick-up bits! It is then I want to do the unladylike thing, open my mouth wide and pour the crumbs in. Knowing my luck, a rogue grain will make me choke! Hmm... wonder if any of my colleagues know the Heimlich, or will I end up blue in the face and look like an Avatar on my deathbed?!

Is the isolation ward all that is available?

I recently read a book where one of the characters needed to escape from a bad patch in her life, so she came to South Africa (SA). When another character asked why SA, she replied along the lines of: "Because it was the furthest place I could think of."

And I am feeling very very far way from the rest of the world. This sense of isolation is gnawing away at me. I feel stuck here, what I think of as the arse end of the world. My flight instinct is overwhelming my fight instinct.

Resolutions - twisted and sick

It is hard to not thing about the new year without new beginnings. Hence resolutions. But they're all about self improvement and blah, blah, blah... I have been tagged to do a deliciously devilish version of resolutions by Standbymind. It is certainly thinking out of the box:

1. I would pack up and leave, start an entire new existence, besides keeping in touch with a few soul mates.

2. Practice the craft.

3. Lock the Family Unit up in a room so they can actually communicate, or start to.

4. If I could get over my fear of drugs - I would be curious to know it's effects.

5. I would like to beat the hell out of some people, till they get some sense knocked into them. (I am usually a non-violent person)

So, who is up to the challenge to expose some of their darkest thoughts?
